November 2015 Birchbox Sample Choice Comparison

For those of you not familiar with sample choice, it’s a program that began last August where Birchbox subscribers have the option to select a sample to be included in next month’s box. Each month several samples are revealed and the sample you pick will replace one of your traditional 5 samples. This is a comparison of those options based on research I’ve done using other blogs and my own calculations. This month I’ve taken all of my images as screenshots from the official Birchbox video.

This month, Birchbox is launching their first makeup line, called LOC or Love of Color, and subscribers have the chance to choose any of the 8 products that are a part of this line. That’s the most sample options that have ever been offered through sample choice! There is also a curated box, as always. The LOC line was developed in partnership with Youtuber Tati Westbrook, and so she appeared in all of the LOC announcement videos.

First, the sample options. This month’s theme is “Feeling Fancy”. I don’t really understand the theme in context with this month’s sample choices, but I am completely in love with all of the sample choice options. There are 3 lip colors and 5 shadow sticks in the LOC line.

Let’s start off with the lip colors! Up first is First Kiss, which is a lovely peachy pink. This is the one that jumped out to me immediately, since I usually wear subtler lip colors. The second is Wildest Dreams, which is a blue-based red, and up last in Glam Life, a berry shade. Normally I avoid bolder lip colors because I’m always afraid of smearing them or of them wearing off unevenly, but Tati emphasized that these were formulated to stay put through anything, so I may actually give one of the darker colors a shot!

While the lip products are definitely beautiful…. the shadow sticks are simply drop-everything gorgeous. Birchbox, why are you making sample choice so hard this month?!?!?! The first two colors are lighter shades: On Point is described as a silvery champagne taupe, although it looks like it pulls a little lavender in the video swatch. Impress Me is a rose gold with a touch of purple. Tati keeps emphasizing how unique of a shade this is, and while it reminds me somewhat of a couple of shades in the Coastal Scents Revealed 2 & 3 palettes, I agree that it does look different from any single shade I’ve seen before.

Next, there are two darker shades: Smoke Screen is a gunmetal color that looks like it pulls a little blue. Night Owl is a deep plum that seems to be the least shimmery of the eye colors.

Finally, we have Day Trip, a warm copper shade. I personally think this is the least interesting of the available shadows, since it’s such a basic color. I probably have 2 or 3 eyeshadows in my collection that are practically this color.

This has been a super image-heavy post, but I’m not done yet! Here are some more screenshots from the announcement video. Lorelai (with the blonde hair) is wearing On Point and First Kiss. In the first two photos, Tati is wearing Impress Me and Glam Life. In the final photo, Tati is wearing Impress Me and Wildest Dreams. See how pretty they all are?

The guest editor box is also curated by Tati Westbrook and the theme is the modeled after Tati’s blog, “GlamLifeGuru”.

This box includes:

– Shiseido Ultimune Eye Power Infusing Eye Concentrate
– LOC One & Done Shadow Stick in Day Trip
– Avene Hydrance Optimale Hydrating Serum
– Jouer Lip Enhancer
– Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

This box seems like a pretty good one. The Shiseido eye concentrate is new, which is cool — you get to try a product that’s only been around for a few months! The dry shampoo and the lip enhancer both have good reviews. Surprisingly, the Avene serum has mixed reviews — Avene is a much-loved brand, and so it’s interesting that this product isn’t universally liked. This box also includes one of the LOC shadow sticks, although unfortunately in the color I consider the most boring (however, it’s also the color that is probably attractive to the most people, so it makes sense to include it in the curated box — I wish they could let you select the shadow color to receive in the curated box, though! That would really be a gamechanger).

The regular boxes this month are a pretty turquoise and black pattern, with a copper Birchbox nameplate. The curated boxes are a little more boring, although the lavender color is really pretty!

Sample choice will happen on October 27th for subscribers (October 26th for Ace members and referrers).

I can barely decide what to pick for sample choice. If I could only pick one, it would definitely be the Impress Me shadow stick. That color just looks so gorgeous, and I have been so in love with roses and purples recently. However, Birchbox is also offering a ton of LOC value sets on their website, and I’ve been eyeing those… I’m actually considering buying the full set! But realistically I’ll probably end up getting one of the 2 shadow stick/1 lip color clutch sets. It’s just a matter of deciding which color to get in my box and which colors to order.

Which sample choice option are you leaning towards?

P.S. I can’t help but sneak in one last photo from the announcement video… these colors are so beautiful!
